Natural Selection

by Libby Meador

Where pondside edges dissipate
Into molecules of calm and space
And restful alertness supercedes
The weariness of modern dramas
Natural selection
Ebbs and flows in every breath
And this is living.

Where edges are defined
Building towers to the skies
Sidewalks crack the bottom line
And from this ecological niche
A dandelion thrives
Reminding passersby
That nature's not a fragile mother.

  1. a great poem - and that last line is super! Also, the "ebbs and flows" image is one that has gotten me thinking. (btw Love the blue winged teal picture - the only time we get them here they are lost by thousands of miles...).

  6. 'And this is living!' That says it all for me. And I agree with your last line, thank goodness she is not a fragile mother or we would surely have been doomed already!

  8. I love it, from the pond edges, to the "this is living", to the persistence of dandelions, which always impresses me, too.

  10. The end surprises me. I expect this type of poem to warn us of the frailty of nature, but you take it in exactly the opposite direction. I like surprises.
