New Year's Day Miracle

Arriving to work in my mud-splattered truck,
Crossing into the sterile field of sanitized concrete,
I feel like something the cat dragged in,
Until I see the doctor chewing gum
With his hair sticking up uncombed;
And by the time the kitchen serves up
Black-eyed peas for luck,
I know the day is growing better
Despite the illness spreading everywhere;
And when the patient with dementia
Smiles and says my name,
I believe this could be a year of little miracles.

  6. What a lot of detail you manage to put in tight lines. I could picture it all. And the gift of hearing your name rememberd this way is special indeed. Yours was the gift of acknowledging this. Well done.
    BTW, that blue hat with the frayed edge is so becoming. makes me smile each time I see it.

  7. Thank you for refocusing us on the truth that is always there, the fact that miracles and goodness abound if we look for them.

  8. I love it, Libby. Reminds me of working in extended care, and how it took me an entire year to win the trust - and the smile - of one of the residents. It felt like a miracle, for sure. I so love this poem! Many more little miracles ahead, kiddo! A whole year's worth, to enjoy one by one.

  9. Libby,

    Your story is akin to so many told by those who work as a volunteer. Giving of their time and goodness to help feed and care for the less fortunate.
    A lovely story of kindness Libby.

    Eileen:)
